Track 8: Harlan

“This is insane, Harlan! Can you even believe this shit right now?” Brie’s eyes dazzle, excitement lighting her up from the inside out. Catching and spreading within me.

We’re headed across the tarmac, a private jet in our sights.

It’s not my typical method of travel—in fact, I’ve never been on a private jet in my life—and Brie’s right, it’s fucking madness. But when we were booked for this last-minute gig, opening for a major artist in Las Vegas when her surprise guest fell through, our record label insisted. And the rest of the band sure as hell wasn’t complaining. Who wouldn’t ride in a private jet at least once in their lifetime, just to say they have?

I stride toward Brie, wrapping her up in my hold from behind, her feet lifting from the ground as I nuzzle into her neck. “No, love. I can’t believe this insanity right now,” I answer her previous question. Not the jet, not the girl in my arms, not the performance that’s guaranteed to heighten the trajectory of our dreams.

It all feels just like that.

A dream.

As the notion hits me, the sky darkens above, heavy raindrops falling from dusky clouds. Brie looks up from within my hold and simply laughs. Her laughter lands on me like the rain, hitting the hollow of my chest and washing away everything but the sight of her beneath me.

Soft lashes catching rainfall between their strands, the rounded curve of her full lips as they lift into an awestruck smile, the gleam in her light brown eyes as her gaze shifts from the sky and back to me, trapping me within her grasp—though I’m a willing captive if she’s my captor.

I lean down, capturing her mouth in return. She spins in my hold, arms reaching up and over my shoulders, her fingers folding together behind my neck as I pick her up and wrap her around me completely. My hands glide over her waist, my firm grip lowering, dragging her into me as I deepen our kiss, fucking lost to the rest of the world.

Thunder cracks in the distance, challenging the notion, and it inevitably forces us apart.

A heavy breath of amusement falls from her mouth and lands on my own when she realizes we’re the only two left on the tarmac.

“Harlan!” She laughs, and the weight of it vibrates against my chest, tearing my heart closer to hers until I can’t tell which beats belong to who. “What are we doing? Everyone’s on the plane!” Her tone rises with the crescendo of rain pattering against asphalt.

Raindrops beat down on our skin, soaking through our clothing, but I still don’t let her go.

I don’t give a fuck about the rain, and she doesn’t seem to, either. Not really. Our gazes remain locked together, breaths moving between us as an awareness settles in my chest—an acknowledgement of just how much I fucking love her. How much I’ve always loved her. Seventeen, eighteen, pining for her on my bedroom floor, writing songs I wished she’d connect the lyrics to.
